Implementing a lay-off or short time working

  • Be aware that lay-offs and short time working can be a useful way of handling temporary work shortages. A lay-off occurs when the employee is not provided with work for at least one working day due to a work shortage. Short time working applies where the employee works short days or works for some of the week but is laid off for the rest of the week (e.g. they work a four-day week for a period of time).
  • Consider whether employees who have no work to do because of a work shortage could be offered alternative employment in other departments instead of being laid off or put on short time working.
