Parental bereavement leave

  • The parental bereavement leave (PBL) scheme enables all employees to take one or two weeks off work following the death of a child under 18 or a stillbirth.
  • The rights are additional to the statutory right to take reasonable unpaid time off for dependants, e.g. an employee might take a week of PBL immediately on the death of the child and then later take a day off for attending the funeral as time off for dependants.
  • Employees can take either one whole week, two consecutive weeks or two separate weeks of PBL. It cannot be taken as odd days. They can choose to take PBL at any time within the period of 56 weeks beginning with the date of the child’s death or stillbirth and it can start on any ...
