Paternity leave

  • Following the birth or adoption of a child, eligible employees have the right to take up to two weeks’ paternity leave to care for the child or to support the child’s mother or adopter.
  • This leave is additional to shared parental leave. However, if an employee has already taken any shared parental leave in respect of a child, or paid time off to attend adoption appointments, they cannot then take paternity leave in relation to that child (but they can take paternity leave and then shared parental leave). An employee is also not able to take both paternity leave and adoption leave.
